STUDENTS OF THE 2010 ONE HUNDRED BLACK MEN OF LONG ISLAND INC. AFRICAN AMERICAN ACADEMIC CHALLENGE RECEIVE HIGH HONORS

Town Mayor, Town Council and Superintendent Give Students Praise

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) – Students of Westbury and Longwood Schools received high honors for their victories in the 2010 One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc. African American Academic Challenge (History Bowl).

Students Angelique Brown and Yousef Shakil, both of Westbury Middle School beat Hempstead Middle School students in the Junior Division Bulo Osofisan and Sudas Shah both of Longwood Junior High School defeated Wyandanch High School in the Senior Divsion.

Students competitors were recognized for their academic strides by their local community and education leaders; the Incorporated Village of Westbury Town Council, Superintedent of Hempstead Public Schools Dr. Patricia Watkins and Village of Mayor Wayne Hall Sr.

“The 2010 African American Academic Challenge helps to advance the Knowledge of African American History of Long Island (History Bowl),” said Phil Andrews, OHBMLI President. “The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. would like to personally thank Newsday for hosting event at its Melville, Long Island office and State Farm for sponsoring the 2009 scholarships for History Bowl Winners.”

The Challenge is played in a Jeopardy-style format. The winners will go on to compete in the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. National Finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the organization’s national conference in June. The April competition was hosted by Newsday and scholarships for the 2009 calendar year awards in the amount of $500.00 for each student-winner were provided by State Farm Insurance.

The competition is open to all Long Island Schools.

“This year’s National Competition of the African American Academic Challenge is expected to be a grand success with our local students participating,” said Jeremiah Sumter, OHBMLI Vice President of Education. “The students are primed and ready to compete. There is a great level of excitement among their peers, educators and local Members of the 100.”
