On November 7th, 2011 the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. appoints & pins Kevin Byrd to serve as Health & Wellness Chairman to raise awareness of activities that African American can pursue which lead to healthier lives and combat health disparities.
“Health awareness poses a significant challenge for African Americans of Long Island and Kevin Byrd’s appointment as Health & Wellness Chairman for the 100 is a significant step which is timely and needed to reverse the trends of lack of adequate information which leads to health disparities” Phil Andrews, President – 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. The 100 Black Men of Long Island is the 2nd oldest chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., and was established in 1974). Mr. Byrd’s Health Chairman advocacy will cover both Nassau & Suffolk Counties.
The purpose of the 100 Black Men of Long Island is to improve the quality of life for all people on Long Island, particularly those of African-American heritage; achieve 100 percent equality in all aspects of community life, including the elimination of bigotry and discrimination; defend human and civil rights; and give assistance to members in honorable endeavors". Kevin Byrd's work in February 2nd, 2011 (Black History Month) has been honored by over 100 National Mayor/Government officials around American and has been honored with over 100 International Proclamation Awards on behalf of 550 million people (half a billion people); making him the 1st and youngest African American Male Actor to achieve such Historical Achievements under 30 years old.
Kevin Byrd's work in 2009/2010 was honored by The White House on behalf The President Barack Obama, Apolistic Nunicture on behalf of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, Buckingham Palace on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, former President George W. Bush, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, The New York State Governor: David A. Patterson, Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger The Brooklyn Borough President: Marty Markowitz; and 100 International Mayors across the Country. On November 2nd, 2009 a KEVIN BYRD DAY was designated and Proclaimed in the Dekalb County, Georgia on behalf of 1,000,000 people. Kevin Byrd is one of the 1st and youngest African American male to have this honor since 1822.
Award Winning Actor Kevin Byrd has appeared in The Epoch Times September 20 -26, 2007 Edition pg. A3 article titled Brooklyn Byrd Flies High – Up-and-coming actor raises awareness about prostate cancer. According to The Epoch Times New York Staff, Denise Benson, “Amidst the fame, Byrd has still flown high, not only working to raise awareness about prostate cancer which has a significantly higher rate of occurrence among African American males, but also volunteering to help people with autism.”
Kevin Byrd recently starred in his own off-Broadway one-man show that he also co-wrote with Jason Hendricks and co-produced with Marc Meir, entitled, “Release,” in which he played six different men at six different phases in their lives. Release is about identity issues faced by many young men.
The play depicts the lives of six personalities, and the lives of six men ranging in age from 18-60, all from different walks of life, in a one-man show. Release addresses the struggles men encounter from different angles, revealing a deep sense of exploration. For instance, there’s Tony – a teenage boy who suffers from identity issues due to not knowing his father. Tommy, another featured character, is an extremely successful college graduate who deals with the challenges of pleasing his mother. These and the other stories portrayed in "Release" contribute to enlightenment of the thought process of young men and as a result, garners understanding and appreciation for them.
Byrd also starred as Lt. John R. Fox in the award nominated TV special, "Honor Deferred,” produced by Al Roker and Samuel L. Jackson, which premiered on the History Channel. He also wrote, produced, and starred in the award winning film, "The "Last Dayz," Featured in Vibe.com, King Magazine, and the Daily News, and he starred as Cameron Johnson/Cover Model in the best-selling Novel, "Things in Between" by Nathaniel Portis.
Kevin Byrd has won the Cinema Golden Eagle Award and the Freddie Award for “Nicole’s Choice, the Proclamation Award for “The Last Dayz,” and was nominated for the NAMIC Vision Award for “Honor Deferred.”
On October 1st 2004 - Kevin Byrd at the age of 23 years old received his 1st PROCLAMATION AWARD from Mayor Timothy J. Jillian declaring October 1st as KEVIN BYRD DAY making Kevin Byrd the youngest and 1st African American to earn this AWARD in Entertainment from the city of Utica, New York.
On December 1st, 2010 Kevin Byrd was invited to attend a special meeting with the New York State Prostate Cancer Advisory Panel Meeting for the New York State Governor's special Advisory panel on December 13, 2010. This special meeting will take place in Albany, at the State's Capital. Byrd is the youngest member being invited to the Panel with other Prostate Cancer researchers and scientists in America.
