(Hempstead, NY)- On December 19, 20011 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. & Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. and the Jewish Relations Council Long Island (JCRC-LI) collaborated by holding a joint press conference to raise awareness and combat health care issues that are prevalent on Long Island. 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc., Jewish Community Relations Council Long Island (JCRC-LI) and Chi Eta Phi joint press conference announced the formation of an ongoing partnership to improve the quality of health for Long Islanders and encourage early prevention, education, and health care initiatives. Immediately following the press conference the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. held its Annual Holiday Party (Toy Drive & Canned Food Drive) along with a special reception for West Point Candidate Zenal M. Hudson.

“It is important for organizations on Long Island to collaborate to raise awareness and combat at health issues that are prevalent on Long Island. Kevin Byrd recently starred in his own off-Broadway one-man show that he also co-wrote with Jason Hendricks and co-produced with Marc Meir, entitled, “Release,” in which he played six different men at six different phases in their lives. Release is about identity issues faced by many young men.

The play depicts the lives of six personalities, and the lives of six men ranging in age from 18-60, all from different walks of life, in a one-man show. Release addresses the struggles men encounter from different angles, revealing a deep sense of exploration. For instance, there’s Tony – a teenage boy who suffers from identity issues due to not knowing his father. Tommy, another featured character, is an extremely successful college graduate who deals with the challenges of pleasing his mother. These and the other stories portrayed in "Release" contribute to enlightenment of the thought process of young men and as a result, garners understanding and appreciation for them.

Byrd also starred as Lt. John R. Fox in the award nominated TV special, "Honor Deferred,” produced by Al Roker and Samuel L. Jackson, which premiered on the History Channel. He also wrote, produced, and starred in the award winning film, "The "Last Dayz," Featured in Vibe.com, King Magazine, and the Daily News, and he starred as Cameron Johnson/Cover Model in the best-selling Novel, "Things in Between" by Nathaniel Portis.

Kevin Byrd has won the Cinema Golden Eagle Award and the Freddie Award for “Nicole’s Choice, the Proclamation Award for “The Last Dayz,” and was nominated for the NAMIC Vision Award for “Honor Deferred.”

On June 29, 2011 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. hosted a special meeting regarding the 2 Billion Dollar proposed Hempstead Revitalization Plan at their headquarters located at 9 Centre Street, Hempstead, New York 11550. Those in attendance included representatives from the Hempstead Camber of Commerce, Sustainable Long Island, clergy, local government and business owners, community residents and members of the 100 Black Men of Long lsland, Inc.

A presentation of the project was presented by Urban America with a brief overview.

Community members were provided an opportunity to give their input to redevelop downtown.

Village trustees will have a vote on the project over summer on possibly naming Renaissance Downtown as the master developer.

The plan calls for over $140 million in environmental and infrastructure improvements.

For the past few months Urban America and Renaissance downtown has conducted many civic and community meeting to listen to the voice of the community to ensure that their input is implemented when the project is launched. This is a major change in the way developers seek to win approval in development projects.

Approximately 1/3 of property located in the Village of Hempstead is currently off the tax roles.

The project would create a potential for 3,500 permanent jobs, and has the potential for over 10,000 construction jobs over a ten-year period.

Glen Cove project is one as an example of projects in which the developer has had great success.

The Renaissance Downtowns group has reached out to property owners about property that is off the tax rolls.

A lot of the property that are vacant are on the municipal rolls and if they are put back on the private tax rolls that would bring in more dollars in terms of taxes.

West Columbia/main street adjacent to the bus terminal a special trailer has been set up as a community information office to address concerns of residents of the Village of Hempstead.

A major giveback of the project would be implementing employment programs that would prepare and give local residents the opportunity to work on the project.

Local residents are concerned about people being able to get work once the project gets started. The developer stated that they would be willing to sign a public agreement that they will provide opportunities for local residents to get jobs.

The project will require a major investment in the sewage system of the Village of Hempstead, which is currently in need of repair, and will be a major benefit to the area.

Financial Literacy in Schools
In Recognition of National Philanthropy Day on November 15, the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council’s Hip-Hop Economic Empowerment Program, the International Association of Financial, Sport, and Celebrity Advisors and Money XLive Launched a 10-City Financial Literacy Pilot Program at Hempstead High School in Hempstead, New York

The Long-Term Goal of the Initiative is to Place Approximately 27,000 Financial Advisors in the Nation’s Schools Over the Next Three Years to Teach Financial Literacy to Young People

New York, NY - In the spirit of National Philanthropy Day on November 15, the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council, the International Association of Financial, Sport, and Celebrity Advisors (IAFSCA), and Money XLive launched an aggressive pilot program, with the goal of teaching financial literacy to high school students. The 10-city Hip-Hop Economic Empowerment Program (HEEP) began at Hempstead High School in Hempstead, NY and will be held in various cities through March 2011.

In April 2011, which is National Financial Literacy Month, the program will be officially rolled out to high schools throughout the country with the goal of placing approximately 27,000 financial advisors in the nation’s schools over the next three years. The project will support President Obama’s goal to improve financial literacy in America’s schools, and Wall Street’s mission to improve communities throughout the country.

“Celebrating National Philanthropy Day by launching HEEP at Hempstead High School with IAFSCA, Money XLive, and a host of great speakers was the beginning of our three-year plan to bring financial literacy to the nation’s public schools,” said Charles Fisher, Founder and Chairman of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council. “Providing students with a sound financial education will improve graduation rates, and will provide participants with the skills and resources needed to properly manage their business and personal affairs.”

The event on November 15 fulfilled a promise made by the IAFSCA on September 22, 2010 at the Museum of American Finance. The promise was to recognize the importance of National Philanthropy Day by holding a financial literacy event in a school, and kicking off the long-term program. Speakers at the November 15 kickoff event were Phil Andrews, Long Island Chapter President of 100 Black Men; Bryan Barnett, Financial Consultant, AXA Advisors and IAFSCA Founding Member; James Heyliger, President, AMENY (Association of Minority Enterprises of NY); Retired Brigadier General George Jones; James Newkirk, Financial Advisor, Ameriprise Financial; Shakira Stewart; CEO of Optimum Payment Solutions; and Warren Woodbury Jr., President/CEO of Woodbury & Associates.

“Charles and Randy Fisher of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council put a stake in the ground when they sponsored the financial literacy event on November 15 at Hempstead High School,” said Bryan Barnett, Financial Consultant, AXA Advisors. “We kicked off a program that addresses a very important issue, and that is, do the nation’s kids have what it takes to become financially responsible young people, who in turn will grow to be financially responsible adults? The kids were introduced to financial advisors, entrepreneurs, community leaders and philanthropists who are committed to their success, and our goal is to make sure that we provide them with all of the information, resources, and motivation that they need.”

Financial Literacy in Schools
The partners in this imitative are reaching out to business leaders, philanthropists, and celebrities to join the financial advisors in the program. The goal is to make the program fun, entertaining, and educational for the students. It’s important that they enjoy themselves but is also necessary that they retain financial information and have resources they can call upon to receive additional information they need.

“I’m excited about launching this program, which started at the American Museum of Finance on Wall Street, the heart and soul of the world’s financial industry,” stated Randy Fisher, Executive Director of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council. “Students will receive a host of perks when they join our program, and they will have an opportunity to work with celebrities and executives that will reinforce our message. It’s an honor to work with a group of professionals that are committed to improve the financial well-being of our nation’s public school students, and I look forward to the task ahead.”

The HHSYC was founded by its Charles Fisher in July of 2001. The organization was created to help implement the commitments, guidelines and policies made by record companies, artists, community leaders and elected officials at the 2001 Hip-Hop Summit which was held in New York City. FREEPORT, New York - In early September, nearly 100 people attended the First Annual 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. "Scholarship on the Seas” boat ride to benefit the Chapter’s African American Academic Challenge and Dollars and Sense Youth Programs.

The evening cruise aboard Captain Lou Fleet sailed from Freeport, with entertainment by DJ Legend of 98.7 Kiss FM and dynamic motivational speaker Dr. Dennis Rahiim Watson.

The Chapter recognized individuals for their commitment to improving Long Island for all: Joseph Bouquet, Regional Marketing Director for Health Plus received the Community Service Award; Members Col. Equipment to Serve Chapter’s Youth Employment, Leadership and Homework Assistance Programs

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) – One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc. recently received a donation of Hewlett Packard laptop computers from Comp4Kids, a local charitable organization that provides refurbished computers to Long Island youth.

“All children should have access to a computer, to link to the World Wide Web and discover the many opportunities online that can enrich their lives through education,” said Phil Andrews, OHBMLI President. “This gracious donation of laptops from Comp4Kids will make that possible for the many Long Island youth that we mentor.”

Andrews said the Chapter will use the laptops as part of its developing youth employment, leadership and homework assistance programs to be implemented this fall.

Comp4Kids, a Long Island-based IRS recognized 501(c) (3) charity, collects and refurbishes used computer equipment. The organization distributes computers for free to low income families across Long Island, NYC, and lower Westchester. Comp4Kids works with numerous school districts, public libraries, pre-schools, after school programs, special education schools and other charitable organizations which service at-risk children, families, and young adults. Comp4Kids also provides the training necessary to implement technology into their daily lives.

The primary focus of 100 Black Men of Long Island Inc. is to prepare young people who may be at risk for the future by assisting in the enhancement of their academic skills and by increasing their educational opportunities. The programs that directly address this focus are: Mentoring, Scholarship, Achievement Awards, African-American History Bowl, Job Training, and Health & Wellness.

Hempstead, Long Island – 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. participants of the local African American Academic History Challenge and Dollars & Sense program traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. 24th Annual Conference which was held on June 16, 2010 – June 20, 2010 at the Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa located in Hollywood, Florida.

Four local students who participated in the 100 Black Men of Long Island,Inc.'s 14th Annual African American Academic History Challenge received medals for their participation in the African American Academic History Challenge.

The two Westbury students winners of the Middle School competition on Long Island were Angelique Brown and Yousef Shakil. The high school winners from the Long Island local completion were from Longwood High School were Bulo Osofisan and Sudas Shah.

In addition, two students from the Brentwood School District placed 2nd in 100 Black Men of America, Inc.’s national competition of its Dollars & Sense Program. The student participants were Joseph Neckles and Lyndon Miller, each 2nd place student in the Dollars & Sense Program were awarded scholarships in the amount of $1000.00.
100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. is proud to have participated in 100 Black Men of America, Inc.’s 24th Annual Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Awards Dinner Hosted at Crest Hollow Country Club

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) - One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc. recently held its 35th Annual Scholarship Gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

“On behalf of the Officers, Board of Directors, and Members of the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the 35th Annual Scholarship Gala,” said Phil Andrews, OHBMLI President. “Their support helps to fund our African American History Academic Challenge (History Bowl) and mentoring programs, and various other programs of the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc.”

The Gala was an elegant evening that included a sumptuous cocktail hour, full course dinner and dancing.

WBLS Radio host Dr. Bob Lee served as Master of Ceremonies, and entertainers TASE provided neo soul, new R&B, and funk musical performances.

This year’s Gala sponsors include Nassau Community College and National Grid.

Students competitors were recognized for their academic strides by their local community and education leaders; and the Town of Brookhaven Town Council.

“The 2010 African American Academic Challenge helps to advance the Knowledge of African American History of Long Island (History Bowl),” said Phil Andrews, OHBMLI President. “The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. would like to personally thank Newsday for hosting event at its Melville, Long Island office and State Farm for sponsoring the 2009 scholarships for History Bowl Winners.”

The Challenge is played in a Jeopardy-style format. The winners will go on to compete in the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. National Finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the organization’s national conference in June. The April competition was hosted by Newsday and scholarships for the 2009 calendar year awards in the amount of $500.00 for each student-winner were provided by State Farm Insurance.

The competition is open to all Long Island Schools.

“This year’s National Competition of the African American Academic Challenge is expected to be a grand success with our local students participating,” said Jeremiah Sumter, OHBMLI Vice President of Education. “The students are primed and ready to compete. There is a great level of excitement among their peers, educators and local Members of the 100.”

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) – Charles Renfroe, President for Hempstead Union Free School District thanked One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc. Members for mentoring students at Hempstead Public Schools during the May General Membership meeting.

Mr. Renfroe said Members exemplify the kind of positive role models that students need in their lives to help further their education and personal ambitions. One Hundred Members mentor over 50 males in grades 9 - 12. Mentors and mentees have discussions on topics such as skills for success, self esteem and positive relationships. An emphasis is placed on mentees’ expressing their feelings, attitudes and life goals. The Chapter program is conducted in collaboration with Institute for Student Achievement- Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP), Lake Success, NY.

In the past year, students of the Long Island Chapter mentoring program have attended the 100 Black Men of America Annual Conference in New York City, and participated in educational and cultural field trips to the New York Stock Exchange, and Schomberg Centre for African-American History & Culture.

Mr. Renfroe was presented with a Chapter Certificate of Recognition for his commitment to improving education for Long Island youth from OHBMLI President Phil Andrews. Meeting attendees also witnessed the pinning of three new Members; David Perkins of Spingarn Counseling Service Inc., Fareed E. Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall, Sr. set to recognize ABG Schultz Middle School runners-up in OBMLI African American Academic Challenge

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) - Students Elijah John and Timothy John of ABG Schultz Middle School, both runners-up in the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. African American History Academic Challenge, will be recognized by Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall, Sr., Tuesday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m.

The students, both brothers, will be honored at the Board of Trustees meeting at Village Hall. The students will be presented with certificates for their participation in the jeopardy-style, Academic Challenge hosted by Newsday. Check Presented at April General Membership Meeting

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) – One Hundred Black Men of Long Island Inc., received a $4,000 grant for its Dollars and $ense Investment Education Program, from State Farm Insurance during its April General Membership meeting.

The Dollars and $ense Investment Education Program (Dollars and $ense) is a financial literacy program sponsored by State Farm Insurance Companies and authored by the National Association of Investors Corporation. This program was designed to provide high school students, grades 9 through 12, with the opportunity to learn and apply “best practice” strategies for saving and investing. The goal of this program is to help students understand basic savings/investment principles and to apply these standards in their day-to-day
lives.

“We look forward to living up to our promises and commitment to be role models for tomorrow’s leaders, we really do believe that, ‘What they See They Will Be’,” said Phil Andrews, OHBMLI President. “Our goal is to be the premier mentoring organization in the world and to continually be known as the, ‘Organization that makes a Difference’. On behalf of the Officers, Board of Directors, and Members of the 100 Black Men of Long Island,Inc. I would like to personally that State Farm for their continuing support and commitment to be Good Neighbors.”

The One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc. has designed an 8-week program that upholds the integrity of the existing model but is creative and distinctive to their community. The primary goal of this program is to help young people take the initial steps to becoming financially and physically fit.

Naomi Johnson for State Farm Public Affairs and Mandell Smith, State Farm Agent of Commack presented the $4,000 check during the chapter’s headquarters located at 9 Centre St., Hempstead, NY 11550.

"The One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc., is an organization that is committed to providing the five promises that every child needs to succeed in life,” said Johnson. “It is important that every child has a caring adult, a healthy start, effective education, opportunities to help others and a safe place. State Farm is proud to partner with the One Hundred Black Men of Long Island, Inc."

The 100 also pinned two new members, Amun R. Hunda, Senior Community Relations Coordinator for Health Plus, and William King Moss III, Chair, Diversity Party of New York State.

The evening’s special guest included Keisha Walker, Vice President for Development & Operations at Urban League of Long Island.

The One Hundred Black Men General Membership Meeting are traditionally held every second Wednesday of the month.

A.B.G. Shultz Students Runner-Up Winners in 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. African American Academic History Challenge (History Bowl Challenge)

On April 10, 2010 two brothers from the A.B.G.S. Middle School, Elijah and Timothy John were runner-up winners in the 100 Black Men of Long Island African American Academic Challenge (History Bowl Challenge). The competition is open to all Long Island Schools and is played in a Jeopardy style format. The duo came within two questions of winning the championship round and a trip to the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. national finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The siblings performance round was so impressive that they have been invited back to compete in next year’s competition (which will be the first time the competition – which was hosted by Newsday and scholarships for the 2009 calendar year awards in the amount of $500.00 were provided by State Farm – has allowed this).

Their efforts will also be recognized in the local media throughout the New York State area. We anxiously look forward to their bringing home the “Gold” next season. Congratulations to Elijah and Timothy for a job well done, as well as, to their parents Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm John for their assistance in actively helping to prepare their children for this event.

Special thanks to Mr. Ali, six grade social studies and math teacher for serving as the academic advisor and pedagogue to the students for this affair.

high school reporter for the Newsday Youth Summer Job Supplement.

100 Hundred Black Men of America Inc. members Thursday presided over the NASDAQ Stock Market Closing in the daily ceremonial ringing of the bell in recognition of February as Black History Month.

The national organization was represented by four members who serve as officers for the Long Island and New Jersey Chapters. During their visit to the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City’s Times Square, Long Island Chapter President Phil Andrews, Long Island Chapter Public Relations Director Warren Woodberry Jr., Long Island Chapter Board Member William B. Wise and New Jersey Chapter President Jerrid Douglas, were joined by Senior Executives from NASDAQ OMX. The NASDAQ Stock Market Closing Thursday was broadcast on major business and news cable television network stations, world-wide.

Dr. Griffith will speak on,‘The Role of Mentoring in the Obama Era!’

As Provost at York College of The City University of New York, Dr.
Griffith also holds the rank of Professor of Political Science.

A specialist on Caribbean and Inter-American security, drugs, crime, and
terrorism issues, Dr. Griffith has published seven books, including
Strategy and Security in the Caribbean (Praeger 1991), Drugs and
Security in the Caribbean (Penn State University Press 1997), and
Caribbean Security in the Age of Terror (Ian Randle Publishers 2004).

The evening will also include the historic unveiling of the painting
“Day of the Last Debate” by William West, Artist & Chronicler of
Historic Events.

The painting depicts the various events that took
place around Hofstra University on October 15, 2008, the day of the
last U.S. Presidential debate between Presidential Candidates John
McCain and Barack H. Obama.

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) - The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. will receive a $4,000 check from State Farm Insurance for its annual African American Academic History Challenge, to be presented at the organization’s headquarters on January 13, 2010.

“Educating our youth and supporting scholarships for future leaders will continue to be vital to our nation’s future!,” said Phil Andrews, President for The 100 Black Men of Long Island. “Corporate Support enhances our ability to fund Educational and Scholarship Programs designed to Enhance the Study of African-American History.”

Naomi T. Johnson,State Farm Coporate Public Affairs “Education, safety, and community development are key components in State Farm Insurance Companies' goal of helping to build strong, safe, educated communities,” said Naomi T. Johnson , a spokesperson for State Farm Insurance. “This commitment is reflected in our partnership with 100 Hundred Black Men of Long Island to empower our young people in their pursuit to learn about the history of African Americans. We are excited to support this annual African American Academic History Challenge.”

State Farm will present the $4,000 check during the 100 Black Men general membership meeting at 9 Centre Street Hempstead, New York 11550. The State Farm contribution to The Challenge will help fund Educational and Scholarship Programs.

The 100 Black Men will host its African American Academic History Challenge Competition in Melville, Long Island on April 10, 2010. The Challenge is an educational and scholarship program designed to enhance the study of African-American history, and is intended to increase interest among young people about the legacy left to them, and in living lives worthy of the legacy.

The Challenge spurs keen and heated competition, yet helps develop a competitive spirit within an experience that engenders mutual respect and admiration among competitors. The perspective is based upon the notion that able, prepared and dedicated people somehow develop an appreciation for each other’s abilities, even when certain ones excel to higher accomplishments. The result is development of an individual who knows, loves and appreciates him or herself, but who also admires excellence in others.

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, the One Hundred Black Men of Long Island Inc. honored two distinguished individuals for their extraordinary achievements and contributions to the improvement of educational services in our communities. The honorees were Mr. Reginald Stroughn of The Hempstead School District and Mrs. Mary Adams Chairperson Board of Trustees Nassau Community College.

These individuals were recognized and celebrated at the “Mentoring for Tomorrow’s Leaders" Luncheon. Professor Leonard Jeffries, Chairman of the African American Studies Department at City University of New York was the Keynote Speaker and Michael Coleman of News12 served as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

The One Hundred Black Men organization of Long Island is one of several chapters nationwide. The purpose of the organization is to give back to the community 100% effort in rebuilding and strengthening our communities economically, socially and politically. Youth initiatives have been of primary focus in recent years as has the imperative to address the economic plight of Long Island communities.

Proceeds from the affair benefit the goals and objectives of our African American History Bowl, various, mentoring programs, as well as several endowments at Hofstra University, Adelphi University, SUNY at Farmingdale and Nassau Community College.

The Awards Luncheon was held at the Long Island Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, in Uniondale, New York.

On November 11, 2009 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. held it's montly general membership meeting. The guest speaker was Reynold Diaz, Chairman of the Health & Wellness Committee, and the topic was "The Immune System. Health & Wellness is part of 100 Black Men of America's Four for the Future - Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness and Economic Development.

Four new members were inducted into the organization - Dr. Ivelaw Griffith, York College - Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith is Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at York College of The City University of New York. He also holds the rank of Professor of Political Science and is a specialist on Caribbean and Inter-American security, drugs, crime, and terrorism issues. Dr. Griffith has published seven books, including Strategy and Security in the Caribbean (Praeger 1991), Drugs and Security in the Caribbean (Penn State University Press 1997), and Caribbean Security in the Age of Terror (Ian Randle Publishers 2004)., Caron Washington, Warren Woodberry,Jr., and Deron Tucker, Esq.

"Obama Effect" inspires new possibilities for many black students

It's lunchtime at Hempstead High, but every Tuesday, instead of heading to the cafeteria, Ramone Johnson heads to a new kind of class.

He speaks with mentors - volunteers from "100 Black Men of America" who are hoping to inspire African-American teens. They are pictures of success: a retired Army general, a financial consultant, a firefighter.

"These youngsters today, they're willing to talk, and sometimes they just want someone to talk to," said Eddison Bramble, president of the 100 Black Men organization on Long Island. "And that's important."

Instead of athletes or actors, the talk now is about President Obama.

The president's image has been everywhere for the past two years, and it's made an impression on these young men.

In a community like this one where too many African-American young men are surrounded by images of failure, President Obama is a powerful symbol of success.

And that message of success is not just limited to high-schoolers. A Vanderbilt University study concluded that Obama's image of success helped close the performance gap between blacks and whites on test scores for other age groups.

Researchers call it "The Obama Effect."

For now, Ramone Johnson is focused on the future. He wants to be an entrepreneur or a businessman.

He's being raised by his grandmother and is looking to take advantage of every resource, even if it's simply a new image of what's possible.
